What is ‘Not Provided’ Keywords in Google Analytics ? How to Crack it ?

Google Analytics is a fantastic resource for any website owner. From
small hobby sites to government organizations, Google Analytics is a
goldmine of useful information about visitor trends and behavior.

However, there is one area where Google Analytics frustrates its
users: the organic search terms report. An increasing number of results
in this part of Analytics are listed as ‘not provided’ – not much use
when you’re trying to find out what people are searching for.
Note: the ‘not provided’ is lifted for paid search results. It’s just
the organic search results that are often hidden from view.

What does (not provided) mean?

On 18th October 2011, Google announced some big news for website owners. Going forward, when a search is made on a secure
Google webpage and the result clicked, the search term would no longer
be passed to the destination website. Instead, these visits would simply
be grouped together in Google Analytics under the keyword "(not
provided)".

Why did Google do this?

On the surface, the official reason was that this was done in the
name of privacy. Google is suggesting that those searching using a
secure Google connection would not want their search term to be passed
on to the destination site.

Fortunately, there are a few workarounds that can reveal the data behind these figures.

How to Unlock ‘Not Provided’ Results

Before we get into this guide, it’s a good idea to verify just how
many of your organic search keywords are listed as ‘not provided’, and
whether this is increasing . You’ll need to assess whether it’s worth
investing time into decoding these results before you proceed, since
none of these techniques provides a single, foolproof solution.

Method 1: Understand the User’s Behavior With Landing Page Reports

The first way to get around the ‘not provided’ result is to mine
Google Analytics for other information that will reveal more about those
visitors and what they were doing on your site.

This method was described in detail in Dan Barker’s econsultancy blog:

In your Analytics account, head to Admin, then Profiles.

Click the name of the profile you want to work with, and select the Filters tab.

Create a new filter in your Analytics account:

The purpose of this filter is to extract the ‘not provided’ terms. To
do this, extract the URL and rewrite the two in place of the original
‘not provided’ text. Although this doesn’t reveal the exact keyword, it
can help you to understand where that traffic is going and whether you
need to dig deeper with other techniques. (The important part – the
rewrite – is highlighted in red in our screenshot.)
Note that this filter can’t be applied to historical data; you’ll only see it in action for new visits.
There’s a similar technique on Avinash Kaushik’s blog that involves creating an advanced segment to examine which landing pages your ‘not provided’ results are leading to.

Method 2: Use Traffic Sources Data

Within Google Analytics, there’s a second set of metrics that can
help you to decipher your most popular keywords. The Search Engine
Optimization report is designed specifically for this purpose –
specifically the Queries report.

Data in this report is two days out of date, and it’s fair to say
that the metrics here are limited in scope. If you’re managing a busy
website, Traffic Sources simply won’t give you the detail you need to
properly analyze your queries and landing pages; the number of results
it can show is limited, for example.
However, for smaller sites, this report is worth a look for a very
basic overview of what’s happening with organic search on your site.

Method 3: Examine AdWords Data

As mentioned at the beginning of this article, ‘not provided’ is only
an issue for organic search queries. Paid search isn’t affected. That
means you can circumvent the problems caused by ‘not provided’ results
by paying for Adwords and measuring the response rates to keywords via
PPC. These are shown in Google Analytics as Matched Search Queries.

Note that, again, this isn’t an entirely accurate solution; the data
shown in Adwords is only related to traffic that you’ve paid for – not
the organic traffic. However, if you have the cash to spend on keyword
research, it’s another way to boost your understanding of user behavior
and make your SEO research more meaningful.

Method 4: Use Webmaster Tools

Google’s Webmaster Tools dashboard is nowhere near as comprehensive
as Google Analytics, but in this situation, the metrics it gathers does
add some value. Specifically, you can see a very basic overview of
keywords that lead visitors to your site in the Traffic menu, under Search Queries.

Underneath this graph you’ll find a pretty comprehensive list of your website’s keyword performance:

A nice treat that Google Webmaster Tools does give you: It will tell you the clickthrough-rate of your keywords from Google Search.
Sometimes a little more polishing up on your title tags and
meta-descriptions can help increase the clickthrough-rate of these
keywords.
Finally, Google Webmaster Tools also tells you an approximate amount
of search impressions your keywords are attracting. If you know that a
certain keyword is attracting a large number of impressions, it might be
in your best interest to put a little more effort towards ranking for
that keyword to obtain more traffic. One way to do this is to simply
expand your content related to this keyword.

Conclusion

Google’s ‘not provided’ data is a controversial topic, and there’s no
failsafe way to access the data. However, if you’re losing a
significant amount of statistical data to ‘not provided’, it’s certainly
worth investing some time to overcome the problem. Implementing one or
more workarounds may help you to improve your understanding of organic
keywords and get a better insight into your missing statistics.
According to Google and personal experience CPC's of GSP ads are way too low and increasing due to more players entering the market. Also, the strong targeting options it provides helps in boosting CTR 200% more than regular gmail text ads.
How Does it Works ?

Google makes 97% of its revenue from advertising. The majority of that comes from search advertising, which Google sells in a product called AdWords.

The basics of AdWords are pretty easy to understand. Advertisers bid on search keywords (like "insurance"). Google looks at the bids and the quality of the page the advertisement links to. Then, it combines the bid with the quality score to figure out which ad to place on top.
If you’re new to Google AdWords or are considering a PPC campaign for your website, there is a lot to get your head around. What is a Quality Score? How much should you bid for keywords? How do you know if you’re targeting the right terms. It’s not easy.

As you may know, Google lets you tie the +1’s of your Google+ Page to your site, your search results, and your AdWords ads. The company announced a new AdWords feature called Social Extensions, which is how you include your AdWords campaigns.

“Currently (and for campaigns that don’t have Social Extensions enabled) your AdWords ads only show +1’s from people who have +1’d that ad’s landing page,” explains Dan Friedman of Google’s Inside AdWords Crew. “This limits the likelihood that someone who sees your ad will have a friend or contact who’s recommended it. By enabling Social Extensions on your ad campaigns you’re able to leverage all the +1’s your brand has received, whether it be on a search result, on your Google+ Page, your website or on your ads, making it more likely that someone who sees your ad will have a friend or contact who has recommended it.”

“We believe that this has the potential to improve your overall ad performance,” he adds. “In fact, 71% of shoppers say that recommendations from friends and family impact their purchasing decisions. These additional recommendations may result in more conversions and deeper engagement with your business overall.”

That stat comes from a Harris Interactive poll from last year. There’s a good chance that the number is even greater now, with social penetrating search more and more.

There is also a new reporting segment for AdWords, which Google says will help advertisers better understand the impact of social annotations on their campaigns. Advertisers can now segment campaigns by ad groups, keywords or by +1 annotations.

+1 annotations will let you view metrics for impressions where the viewer had a friend or contact that +1’d your brand, impressions that included an anonymous count of people who +1’d your brand, and impressions without any social annotations. The segment works with all campaigns, regardless of whether or not you enabled Social Extensions.

You can enable Social Extensions by clicking “Ad Extensions” in your AdWords account and finding the option in the rop down menu. Choose new extension. Google will ask you to add your verified Google+ Page URL.

Google talks about how to get your Profile or Page verified here. “If we think you or your page might benefit from a badge, we’ll reach out to manually verify you,” the company says. “If you believe a profile or page is impersonating you or your business, report the profile or page and select the ‘Impersonation’ option.

If you have a verified profile or page and change your name, even by a single character, your verification status will be reset and you’ll need to be re-verified.”

If you change the Page associated with your AdWords campaign, the campaign will begin adding +1’s on your ad to the Page’s total.

Social extensions are available in all countries. Advertisers will be charged for standard clicks on text ads when users click the ad text, but not when a user +1’s the ad.

Social extensions can appear in an ad when it’s shown on Google.com as well as throughout the Google Display Network. That applies to both desktop and mobile. The feature is compatible with all AdWords targeting options.

The feature is not “yet” accessible via AdWords Editor or the AdWords API. Given that Google made a point of saying “yet,” I assume that will change in the future.

This is the toughest limit to deal with so if you notice someone is at 2,000 don’t unfollow them for not following you back (because they can’t) and consider tweeting a #followfriday recommendation for them so they can get past that limit. When you hit this limit you will see the message: ” You are unable to follow more people. Please read about our following limits. ”SOLUTION: You have to unfollow non-followers in order to follow anyone else. A Twitter App like JustUnfollow as I explained in this strategy for Growing Twitter Followers.

Twitter Followers to Following Percentage Limit: You can only follow a small percentage more people than follow you. According to Twitter: “this limit is different for every user and is based on your ratio of followers to following. While you can follow 1000 per day you can’t follow them too quickly or you’ll hit a limit that may lock down your account for up to 24 hours. I believe it is safer to follow during off hours instead of during prime U.S. business hours if you don’t want to hit that limit.

One of the biggest questions that people have about social media marketing (and all business marketing actually) is the question of driving traffic. How do I get more customers? How do I get people to visit my website? How do I get more fans on Facebook. It makes sense, if people don’t find you, they can’t buy from you.

Buying Facebook Fans

My take is that you’re doing it wrong. Also, you just asked for help buying people. DO YOU HEAR YOURSELF RIGHT NOW?

But the truth is, sure, there are many ways to buy people on Facebook.

You can hire a street team to go out and offer people cash money to like your brand on Facebook.

You can buy fans through the allure of contests that hawk free iPads, exotic trips or other shiny things.

You can buy them via human traffickers bulk packages like this one from www.bulkfans.com

Any one of these methods will help you see a sharp increase in your brand’s number of fans. But there’s a huge problem with this. It’s not the cost associated or the fact that you’re pretty much selling your soul to the social media devil. It’s that by buying people, you actually lower your EdgeRank score and limit the odds that your content will ever be seen. By anyone.

Genius.

If you’re not familiar with Facebook’s EdgeRank algorithm, I’d encourage you to read The Next Web’s Everything You Need To Know about Facebook’s EdgeRank because it truly does live up to its name. Here are some highlights.

EdgeRank, on paper, looks like this:

What EdgeRank does is essentially determine whether or not your content is worth Facebook showing to its users. It creates an affinity score between your page and a particular user, adds a content type-specific weight (is it a link, a picture, status update, etc), and then adds a freshness factor to round things out.

As soon as you publish something, that score is immediately attached to it. That score is then increased based on user participation with that update – do they like it, share it, comment on it. If users routinely display they love your content, your base score rises. However, if they show they are bored with your content by NEVER doing any of these things, then your affinity score drops. The lower your affinity score, the less likely it is that anyone will ever see your content, regardless of how much time you may have spent creating it.

And that’s when buying fans become problematic.

When you pay money for a person (really, do you hear me right now?), you’re buying someone who isn’t interested in your brand. They only Like you for that $20 you just gave them or because they’re trying to win an iPad they’re too poor or lazy to buy themselves. That person is there for a prize, not for an interest in your brand.

They will never interact with you, they will never visit your page again. They are lowering your brand’s EdgeRank score simply by existing.

Remember that guy you dated in college who only hung around to eat your groceries and drink your beer? Same concept.

What makes Facebook different from other social networks is that you have to prove you deserve to be seen. If you build up 20,000 followers on Twitter, you can rest assures that anyone watching their timeline when you hit tweet will see your content. You can even use tools like tweriod to understand WHEN the majority of your audience is looking at their timeline.

For users to see your content on Facebook, you need to prove on a regular basis that people actually care. And you prove it with your numbers. The ones that report people engaging with what you’re putting out. No engagement, no visibility.

Your brand doesn’t need leeches sucking off EdgeRank. Instead, focus on connecting with the people who are genuinely interested in what you’re offering. The users who will want to interact with your page consistently over time.

How do you find them?

By creating a compelling experience on your Facebook Brand page, building the WHY into it from the very beginning, and delivering on it time and time again.

Can you do that by running Facebook contests? Sure! Facebook contests are a great way to build exposure and fans. But the contest needs to be highly-targeted to the brand and to the experience. Getting people to Like you for a free iPhone will do more damage than good.

Can you use Facebook ads to lure them in? Yes. Another great Facebook marketing tactic. But realize that the ad is only going to work if you’re DELIVERING something. If there’s value. If you’re inviting them to be part of an experience that interests them.

You can buy people all you want, but bought people don’t engage and will simply damn you to social media purgatory. Instead, put energy into creating an experience that will attract a response.

Share unique photos and video

Run contests that are brand-related

Discuss topics intended to push button

Touch on bubble-type events [Like the White House Town Hall or Mark’s next Facebook press conference

Ask questions

Make yourself part of larger conversations.

Tie online to offline and vice versa.

Basically, concentrate on wooing the fans you have.

As it turns out, social media relationships aren’t much different from real life relationships. You can jump through hoops to be the guy who impresses people with a gimmick or you can just extend your hand and say hello.

I know who I’d rather talk to.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Mod_Pagespeed as a Service<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"> <span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"> <span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Quite a few larger sites already use services that offload some of their files to content delivery networks, but this system is a bit different. Just last year, Google launched <span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">mod_pagespeed<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">, a module for the popular Apache web server. Page Speed Service basically turns ths module into an on-demand service. By applying “web performance best practices,” as Google calls it, the service can speed up the loading times of your site by between 25% and 60% on average. That is quite a significant number and the improved performance is achieved by concatenating CSS, compressing your images, and gzipping resources.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Caching
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"> <span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">This system also agressively caches content, though it’s important to note that this is not a traditional content delivery network and does not support Flash, streaming audio and video content. Google will, however, serve some of your files from its servers around the world, leading to even faster download times for your users who are further away from your server.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Geting Started
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"> <span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Advanced webmasters can easily add the mod_pagespeed module to their own setup, but for those who just want an easy way to speed up their sites and don’t have the in-house expertise to manipulate their server setup – and don’t mind pointing their DNS to Google’s servers – this new system should prove to be quite useful.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"> <span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">It’s worth noting that some services, including the <span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">CloudFlare <span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">service we use to speed up this site, already offer similar features (including CSS compression, CDN-like image caching etc.).
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"> <span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Page Speed Service is still only being tested by a small number of sites, but you can see how much it could speed up your site <span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">here<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"> and then <span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">sign up for early access here<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">. For now, the service is available for free, but Google plans to charge for it at a later point. While the price is not clear yet, Google promises that it will be “competitive.”
Google+ joined the social arena earlier this month with beta testers and changed the game, as some may say, of social networking permanently.
Google +’s features may seem similar to Facebook’s at first glance. With chat functionality, status updates, multimedia sharing and group collaboration capabilities, the two social networks appear pretty similar on paper. Upon further examination of tools and functions, we see distinct differences.

Chat :
Facebook defaults to allowing anyone that you have friended to start a chat with you. Let’s say you have 1000 friends than all of them can start an instant chat with you.
Google + does not default to giving everyone access to chat. You can choose who you invite to give that level of access to you. And the chat application is the tried and true Gchat.
Video Chat :
Facebook has video chat and they have an agreement with Skype, but the chats are designed for one to one conversations.
Google + has “Hangouts” allowing you to video chat with up to 10 people at once. In a hangout you can also watch a video together and have a conversation about it. Hangout could be the new online collaboration tool. If you are part of a team that is not in the same place it could be a great way to keep people engaged during a call. I can see great opportunities for marketing teams to make use of this feature to solicit approvals or simple feedback on assets in production…and that’s just the beginning.
Posting :
Facebook treats all post equal in terms of how they are displayed within the news feeds. (top news and most recent)
Google + displays video and Image posts with significantly more prominence than it does other types of posts.
Group Collaboration :
Facebook does not have an application designed for real-time group interaction.
Google + has “Huddles” a very simple way to start a group chat with anyone in your circles. It is easy to start a chat and stay engaged in the conversation. Another nod toward group online collaboration, making it easy to connect on a project, budget approvals or a quick team meeting.
Search :
Here we won’t do the head to head comparison but with Google + sitting on top of Google’s robust search engine there are several questions that come to mind. Will your Google + posts boost your Google rankings?
Google + surely steps out in front when it comes to team and group collaboration. Whether you want to bring people together, around the corner, or across the pond the tools are there and make it much more compelling to participate.
As you think about the debate what side do you see yourself gravitating towards?
Not to mention that running a Facebook Ads campaign is like throwing yourself into a Nascar Race Track, meaning that you can run a test and within a hour or two, and know which ads perform better before you continue spending the ad dollars.
In this post, I will focus on a few targeting options within Facebook Ads that can be applied to your Google Display efforts.

Leveraging Facebook Ad’s Targeting Abilities :
The targeting abilities alone in Facebook are superior to that of Google’s current demographic options. In Facebook, you can create multiple tests based on the a few of the following options:

#1 Age Segmentation
In Adwords you have the ability to exclude certain age groups just as in Facebook. However, Facebook provides actual audience circulation numbers which can be helpful for future strategies. For example, you could do an Age segmentation test targeting different Age Groups with different messaging and photos. These tests can run at the same time and you can see the best performers very quickly.

#2 Battle of the Sexes
Instead of spending thousands of dollars in Google, why not take advantage of Facebook Ads, where you get basically find whether Men or Women convert better. Since Facebook’s Algorithm is extremely fast, you can see results within hours with a set daily budget. By doing some simple multivariate testing in Facebook Ads where you provide different CTA’s and Photos, you will have a better idea on what to try next with Adwords Display.

#3 Geo targeting
This option seems redundant, but in actuality it does have it’s benefits in FB Ads. The reason is based upon the Audience Volume of the specific States or Regions. Even though Facebook has a different audience and frankly “NOT EVERYONE IS ON FACEBOOK”, it does provide a little insight into the “savvy ness” of the visitors.

#4 Likes & Interests
This is an interesting targeting ability which can help provide the advertiser identify different interests and promote their products/services based on those interests. For example, what if a Facebook advertiser wanted to test if their 4×4 Offroading DVDs would get any traction “no pun intended” with Females who are already fans of Cars.com, REI, Cabelas, etc… Furthermore, if this test revealed that it did indeed increase conversions, then the Advertiser would then have better insight on how to target specific sites in the Google Display Network.

#5 Relationships
Now, you may think I am pulling this one “out of my a%$”, but there is value in understanding the different in relationships and applying it to Adwords. In this case, one strategy would be to test Married Females who are looking for an anniversary gift for their husbands. You could create and test various products, CTA, Age segments and Landing Pages that perform better. Once that has been identified, you can take those winners and apply them to a Display Campaign in which you target Females and specific ages only.

How to effectively and efficiently implement these Facebook Tests:
After performing countless Facebook Ads tests in the past, I have to give “KUDOS” to Acquisio’s Facebook platform as they have built a phenomenal product that honestly made it so much easier on myself to build out these various tests in such a short period of time. If i had to identify one major “bell and whistle” it would have to be their ability Mass Copy all campaigns and Ads and update all of the targeting options within a few clicks. The reason for this choice is that you cannot do that in the current Facebook Ads interface. If you are using Facebook Ads, I would recommend trying Acquisio’s platform.

In Conclusion:
Facebook Ads has had a reputation of being a poor performing platform with lots of cost and little conversions. (Which is why they decided to pull their conversion tracking, but bringing it back slowly to specific users). However, if you start digging into different strategies in Facebook you can actually apply what you learn into your Adwords Display Campaign. Moreover, if you consider the speed at which FB Ads run, you can have a good sample size in hours, not weeks. In this Semgeek’s opinion, I believe that FB Ads deserves more attention from an advertisers budget not so much for ROAS%, but for it’s uncanny ability to help predict what will work best in other search engine platforms.
No wonder then that Google is currently the undisputed king of online advertising especially search advertising.

However, Google is aware that the market forces will not let it rest on its laurels and just do what it is doing. Microsoft is hell bent on making it big in Online with a clear focus on search (advertising) despite constantly losing money on its online business. Microsoft-Yahoo search alliance is the latest initiative from Microsoft to become a worthy competitor to Google in online search and eventually advertising.

Well, Google is not the one to play the wait-and-watch game. In an effort to conjure up more and more customers for its adwords business,

Google is now offering credit cards to it select US customers allowing them to spend money advertising on Google even when they are financially constrained to do so. The AdWords card will be Master Card issued through the World Financial Capital Bank and will carry an 8.99% annual rate

While the details of the offer is sketchy, the credit card is targeted at SME’s who may not have the budgets to run large ad campaigns especially during seasonal events like Mother’s Day etc. Since last few years, Google has intensified its focus on SME’s globally and has played evangelist for bringing these businesses online.

Adwords Credit Card will no doubt encourage increased spending from consumers and i am sure it will encourage new customers to experiment with adwords and qualify for credit at some point in future.
To think of it, Google is doing nothing new and is only doing what technology vendors have been doing for a while. IBM, Microsoft often finances software / hardware migration programs for universities and companies in order to entrench itself with the customer.
The recurring revenues in future purchases and subscriptions more than make up for the upfront financing. Google is trying the same thing with these adwords credit cards and hopes to build long term customers.

From the sound of it, the strategy looks win-win. However, the exact terms of these credit cards will determine the adoption. If the terms and interest rates are acceptable, Google is expected to gain a significant advertising spend from SMEs

What are your thoughts on Google’s credit card offering for advertising? Will this encourage advertisers to increase their online ad spending with Google?
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10851357804476018723noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1273945234114308845.post-49375299442610997042011-07-24T21:38:00.000-07:002011-07-24T21:39:37.816-07:00How Google is making $3 Billion a month in Advertising ...??
On July 14th, Google announced their Q2 earnings for 2011. Revenue was up 32% from last year bringing total Q2 earnings to just over $9 billion dollars. So how is Google making all this money? Well in large part, from us. Paid clicks on ads increased 18% from Q2 last year while the average cost-per-click has gone up 12% since then. In just the last 4 quarters, Google brought in $32.2 billion in total advertising revenue!
This inspired our good friends over at Wordstream to take a look at which keywords generate the most revenue for Google and on Monday they released the results of their survey to uncover the most expensive AdWords keywords. Check out the handy infographic they’ve created showing the 20 top CPC keyword categories (click to enlarge):

What these categories have in common is that they include businesses with a high customer value. Essentially, these businesses can afford to pay a lot of money to acquire new customers because of the high return. So what do you do if you are competing in one of these high CPC categories? Wordstream offers 4 tips for bidding in these expensive categories.

Be Specific: Target specific, 3-5 word keywords. Use a keyword tool to generate specific keyword ideas, and use keyword match types to ensure you’re only paying for keywords that are very specific to your business.

Use Negative Keywords: Use a negative keyword tool to help figure out what kinds of words you’re likely to be matched against and weed out keywords that aren’t relevant to your business.

Be Relevant: High Quality Scores can help lower your average CPC. Yes, it was launched just over a year ago and Facebook’s Like button has become very popular on websites throughout the world – a recent study suggested that 10.8% of all sites on the internet use the button on their pages.
It may not always be visible, but all the major sites use Facebook’s Like in some capacity. And it’s very easy to add a Facebook Like button to your own website – simply head over to the Facebook Developers pages, type in your website and grab the code.
And while you’re there, you might want to check out the Like stats for some other websites, too. Maybe your competitors, for example. That’s right – Facebook lets you type in any website into its Like Button Code generator and if they’re using the button you can see their Like stats right there.
By looking at Alexa’s list of the top websites, we can quickly work out which of these is the most ‘Liked’ on the internet. Amazingly, it isn’t Facebook.com. They’re not even close. It isn’t Google, either, who aren’t even as well-Liked as Twitter. Yahoo? LinkedIn? Don’t make me laugh.
So who is it?

If you guessed YouTube, give yourself a pat on the back. With 5,269,221 total Likes, YouTube has over 2.5 times the Likes of second-place Twitter. Google takes the shameful bronze.
Amazingly, YouTube doesn’t even feature the Like button on their page. So how have all of those Likes been accumulated? Witchcraft! Or possibly in some other, less sinister way. But it’s right there for all to see.

Without real & measurable business benefit as a subsequent output of labor input, then what you are measuring is simple activity & NOT “productivity”.

True productivity starts at “why”, gains momentum at “what” and accelerates on continuous & measured improvements.

The Power of “Why”

People don’t do what they’re told, people do as they believe! The way we exercise our thoughts are through actions, likewise we exercise our beliefs through engrained habits or behavioral patterns. Ever go on a road trip that you weren’t convinced was right for you? How did that workout for you? Were you enthusiastic about overcoming the challenges that appeared along the way? Did you look on the bright side of ever set-back?

“Efforts and courage are not enough without purpose and direction.” – John Fitzgerald Kennedy; A strong sense of purpose, something you can identify with, believe in.. is always a sure bet to get you enthusiastic about the journey your company is about to take you on. It’s purpose that gives you faith & courage to seek alternative paths and make proactive efforts to achieve your milestones faster. Purpose is the first key to engagement & commitment to excellence.. it’s the self imposed response to an employee who briefly asks themselves “why bother”.

What’s your company’s “why”and how do remind everyone every day of it? And this is just the 1st step..

The Direction of “What”

“If you are working on something exciting that you really care about, you don’t have to be pushed. The vision pulls you.” – Steve Jobs; Follow-up strong purpose with a clearly articulated & understood vision, and your powerful formula is more than half-way there.

People more quickly propel themselves toward something they can visualize.. almost touch & feel.. than into a dark tunnel or foggy cloud. How quantifiable is your company’s vision? How absolutely clear is the short, medium & long terms goals / objectives of your organization.

What mechanisms are you using on a regular basis to remind people of what your vision is.. the end point of your journey’.. and most important, what are the regular (rhythmic) interval checks or pulse-checks that measure your progress and as well what’s left to achieve? Yet this is merely your 2nd step..

The power of metrics.. measurements & continuous improvements

What doesn’t get measured doesn’t get done, because people don’t do what you EXPECT.. they do what you INSPECT!

That’s the reality of human nature, and to assume anything else is a guaranteed formula for disaster. If purpose (Mission) & vision need to be quantifiable, then even more so does execution. As Thomas Edison once said, ”Vision without execution is hallucination.” But how do you know that you’re executing? After-all, how do you know whether your teams are being “productive” or simply busy (activity)?

If you’ve got your act together in what regards setting & measuring against performance, how are you ensuring your team is continuously measuring progress and growing through key learning?

“Vision without action is a dream. Action without vision is simply passing the time. Action with Vision is making a positive difference.” – Joel Barker.. Action with vision is measurable! It’s when you can identify whether employee’s behavioral patterns at work are producing business results. For this, you need to be able to measure activity that drives results and not just activity working on the applications or environments you’ve deemed productive. I can spend an entire day in a word processing application, just like I can in a spreadsheet, but unless I’m producing business results, it’s all just a hallucination.

On the contrary, in parallel to measuring where I’m investing my time, how many uninterrupted & focused work sprints I’m able to generate in a day, if i can associate my activity to quantifiable increases in business results.. then I can confidently state that I’m productive.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10851357804476018723noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1273945234114308845.post-49327901275505849232011-06-24T03:57:00.000-07:002011-07-22T02:18:10.156-07:00Who is responsible for Low Productivity : Social networks or irresponsible Employees..??

Well, to Start with the popularity and use of social media sites is eating up employee time during and after work. Should we again ‘blame the internet’ or are we hiring irresponsible employees?

Let’s face it, the workplace is full of distractions. On any given day, a coworker may come up to you while you are busy for a quick conversation. When that ends you get an unexpected phone call. After you take that phone call, you get asked to jump on another conference call you weren’t planning for. Next you get asked to join an impromptu meeting in someone’s office that wasn’t on your calendar.

The workplace has long been the ultimate manufacturer of distraction with good intentions. Everyone wants to get things done as fast as possible with as much quality as they can. Some companies are starting to shutdown access to various social media sites saying that company productivity is taking a big hit since social media’s adoption and popularity has grown.

Recently I read a post by Brad Friedman on Social Media Today that provides some actual numbers and dollar values associated with low productivity due to digital distractions. He references a survey done by harmon.ie where they commissioned 515 IT users working in the U.S. and various global companies. The goal of this survey was to better understand electronic distractions in the workplace. I’m not at all surprised by the numbers BUT I can’t say that these numbers reflect a whole comprehensive truth as to why. For the same reasons that we can’t blame violent video games for a child’s misbehavior, or a specific genre of music for the lawlessness in the personal lives of its fans, we can’t blame social media for a worker not managing their own time effectively.

According to Brad’s post regarding the survey results:

“57% of work interruptions involve either the use of social tools like email, social networks, and text messaging, or switching windows among disparate standalone tools and applications, as well as personal online activities such as Facebook and Internet searches. The remaining 43% of workplace distractions comes from activities like phone calls, talking with co-workers and ad hoc meetings.”
“45% of employees surveyed reported they work only 15 minutes or less without getting interrupted and 53% waste at least one hour each day due to all types of distractions. That hour per day translates into $10,375 of wasted productivity per person, per year, assuming an average salary of $30/hour. Doing the math we learn for businesses with 1,000 employees, the cost of employee interruptions exceeds $10 million per year.”

Reading these statistics it was clear to me that generally speaking, more time needs to be spent between managers and their employees (sans micromanagement of course) to define what productivity actually means and what it looks like.

Your employer is not a babysitting service

I’ve been working in the corporate world now for fifteen plus years. I’m definitely not the most organized person at work but I have a lot of responsibility and it’s my duty to figure it out and take care of business. If I’m not sure how to manage or organize my time, I can always pick the brain of my more naturally organized friends, coworkers or hit up my manager for tips and tricks. Regardless of who I go to or what types of things I try, the bottom line is that it’s still my issue. I need to manage my own time as a professional.

Working in social media all day, it can be difficult to concentrate on doing the work I do on Facebook business pages and on Twitter while ignoring the notifications that keep coming in from my friends and family. However, managing this is still my responsibility and I need to take it seriously if I want to stay employed. My employer should not have to come up with software solutions or new policies that block, manage, organize my time so that I can be productive. That is my job.

Many of us long-time creative/marketing types have complained and butted heads with techie IT admins about locking down certain websites or connectivity. IT has always been the ceiling of digital oppression in the workplace for those of us that like to traverse the world outside our firewalls. But while philosophically I disagree with putting network tools in place for the sake of ‘increasing productivity’ by locking out certain websites and domains, looking at the numbers in the study I mentioned above, it’s apparent that almost half of employees who’s job involves being online, getting email, etc. need some education and tips on time management at work. To that end, I can understand why IT would be encouraged to put something in place.

The issue however can and should be accomplished and dealt with using real people, regular discussion, and good management. The Orwellian approach to productivity is not the right path. Network security is important for many obvious reasons, but network solutions used solely to ‘increase productivity’ through digital imprisonment are wrong on every level.

If I can’t have Facebook open (when I’m not doing work on it) or a Twitter client used for my personal account running while I’m working on something else because it’s distracting, I need to close them. End of story. If I’m in a meeting and my iPhone is blowing up with social media notifications and distracting me, I need to turn it off (I still suck at this).

An employee’s inability to manage their own digital distractions is no one’s fault but their own.
